South Tyrol & Northern Italy

What to see in Dorf Tirol & Merano and the surrounding area

Dorf Tirol alone has three castles: Schloss Tirol, Schloss Brunnenburg and Schloss Auer, testament to the multitude of castles and fascinating history that can be found in the Merano region. These majestic castles and stately homes are typical of this landscape and some now house excellent museums. Schloss Tirol – the castle that gave Tyrol its name – is now home to the State Museum . At Schloss Brunnenburg, the Agricultural Museum is well worth a visit. Both can only be reached on foot via the famous Falknerpromenade. Which starts right in front of our hotel.

Kids will love the Bird Care Centre in Schloss Tirol and the adventure museum Touriseum in Schloss Trauttmansdorff, the former holiday residence of the Austrian empress Sissi. Interesting facts about mountains can be gleaned at Schloss Juval, which now houses the Messner Mountain Museum.

Your holiday in Dorf Tirol in South Tyrol, Italy - Hotel Erika

Your holiday in Dorf Tirol in South Tyrol, Italy

We’re proud of our home, Dorf Tirol in Italy. Dorf Tirol blends picturesquely into the breathtaking backdrop of the northern Italian Alps of South Tyrol. From around 600 metres above sea level in the village centre, to the Spronser Lakes at around 2,500 metres, you can discover the scenic beauty of South Tyrol during a holiday in Dorf Tirol. At the top of the local Hochmuth mountain, you enter the Texelgruppe Nature Park, the largest in South Tyrol.

Around 300 days of sunshine a year make holidays in Dorf Tirol a truly wonderful experience. No wonder Dorf Tirol has always been a centre of attraction for nature, hiking and summer sports enthusiasts . It has also played an important role in history.

The Counts of Tyrol built Schloss Tirol in the 11th century to seize power over the land of Tyrol, which was called the "Land of Mountains" at the time. Dorf Tirol – Tirolo – lent its name to the province of Tyrol. Today, the castle houses a museum dedicated to the history of Tyrol and South Tyrol.

Spa town of Merano: A pearl in South Tyrol - Hotel Erika

A pearl in South Tyrol

Even Empress Sissi loved the spa town of Merano. Alongside palm trees and cypresses, there’s an impressive display of rare plants. Plan a stroll through the gardens and along the promenades during your holiday in Merano and the surrounding area.

The historic city centre is packed with picturesque alleyways and interesting Art Nouveau buildings.

At the beginning of the 19th century, Europe's great and good met here in Merano, from Franz Kafka to Emperor Franz Joseph. Everyone wanted to benefit from the Mediterranean climate. Which is why Merano developed into an attractive cultural centre that still offers many events today.

Holidays in the sun

From the Vinschgau Valley to the Dolomites... The unspoilt mountain landscape of the Alps with lush, green valleys and pleasantly mild climate make South Tyrol one of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe.

South Tyrol is surrounded by the Swiss canton of GraubĂĽnden, the Austrian provinces of Tyrol and Salzburg and the Italian regions of South Tyrol Trentino, Veneto and Lombardy.

In South Tyrol, the most northern part of Italy, you can experience an Alpine feel and a Mediterranean lifestyle. Enjoyment, joie de vivre and being close to nature – make your holiday an unforgettable experience.

The most beautiful gardens and green spaces - Hotel Erika

The most beautiful gardens and green spaces

The 12-hectare botanical gardens at Trauttmansdorff Castle, , one of the most beautiful gardens in Europe, are well worth a visit to see the most beautiful flowers and plants from all over the world, all year round.

The Tappeinerweg, Merano's most famous green space, is home to native, Mediterranean and exotic plants. Take a stroll along the promenade.

We owe the magnificent variety of plants in Merano and environs to the mountains of the Texelgruppe, which preserve our Mediterranean climate. Incidentally, in the Middle Ages, when South Tyrol was part of Tyrol, it was nicknamed the "Land in the Mountains".
